My Peonies

Our first peony of the year. Just starting to bloom.

Day 2

Day 5
Okay, question for you gardeners out there because I am NOT a gardener and Love Bunny doesn't have all the answers. Do we just let the peony plant droop like that or tie it up? The flowers drag on the ground.

Isn't it magnificent?!

Day 6 and a new one opening up.

And another one.

And yet another one! We are truly blessed to have this much beauty in our back yard.

The dew was still on it this morning when I captured this picture. Glorious creation of our God.

And finally, after 4 years and 9 clematis plants and only 1 plant surviving, we have a flower off of the last one. Love Bunny brought it in here to my office last night and I truly couldn't believe it after all these years.

Wait a minute. He took me outside and showed me the plant from which it came. You're not going to believe this. The longest one below is one we kept in a bucket for a year and during last winter we stored it in the garage. He just today put it into the ground.

But there are 2 plants. We didn't realize one was still alive and growing.

It looks like it's almost dead but some leaves came up and yes, it is the smallest one where I've put an arrow. This clematis really wants to live! It's growing, although it looks dead and only has that tiny little branch growing. I think it's going to survive.

  1. Hi! There are peony cages you can buy which have three stakes and a round wire frame which you place on your peony's in the Springtime before they grow too large. The round wire supports the Peony bush with the three stakes holding it firmly in the ground. You can buy them at any garden shop. I will try to take a pic of mine today. I just got my internet back after two days so hopefully I can post. Comcast arrives on Tues. Argh!
    Enjoy your beauties!

  3. Peonies are not my speciality, but I might prop them up a bit off the ground. Gosh, Connie...your photos are great...love all the macro shots and the one with the dew is dewlightful! Gotta love a survior. After the winter we had here in Texas, not much in my ground survived. I've got FauxFlowers on my porch for the first time EVER! I've gone so much that I just can't keep LIVE ones watered. Maybe I'll get some Mums in the fall...I hope to be home more then....Sue

  4. we always just let our peonies go the way they want, but if it is raining or the ground gets wet you may be able to weave it in and out of the other stems so the bloom doesn't rot. Your peonies look gorgeous!!

  6. I cannot believe how wonderful your photographs are of your flowers. Great detail, color, stunning. What kind of camera are you using please. You should be doing this for a GARDEN MAGAZINE. I loved seeing them. Please stop over to see me...it has been such a long time since we had a visit.

  8. Gorgeous!!! Peonies are my favorite flower (along with hydrangeas). I don't have any, though, but they're still my favorite.

The photo with the dew still on it is my favorite.

    Happy Sunday,

  9. Good Morning Connie! Your peonies are farther along than mine. Yes, they do get heavy so I both stake and tie. I use dark green stakes so that they don't show up too much, and some green twine too. I'm surprised you are having trouble with clematis. Is it getting enough sun? You might try some Zamzow's Thrive. I love that stuff!! Have a wonderful Sunday!

  10. Ah, peonies are so gorgeous! Yours are beautiful, Connie. You can buy peony cages which will support the plants. They are pretty inexpensive.

I have a clematis that grows every year and maybe yields 1 flower. Same issue you have. I wonder why? I can only think I planted it in a bad spot.

  11. Beautiful flowers. I don't have any peonies but I need to get some. My neighbors have one and it's so pretty, just like yours.
I have trouble with my clematis, too. It was doing real well growing up my little trellis until hubby pulled out what he thought was a weed next to it (I still swear it was not a weed) and he killed the clematis in the process. I hope it comes back.

  14. Hi Connie!

Oh, I just love Peonies!! Next to roses they are my favorite. These are great pictures. Good advice about the cage for them. I have mine leaning against a metal trelis. Come by for a visit, haven't seen you in awhile.

  15. Hello Connie, oh you very lucky girl you. We can't grow peony here in the desert, it's way too hot. Your plant is gorgeous. Can you imagine if they had a scent, what they would spell like?! I would think you should stake the plant with something instead of having it on the ground, but I don't know for sure. Thankyou so much for the share this week. Happy Pink Saturday, Char

  17. Connie, Your peonies are gorgeous. Mine are stuggling and trying to grow. I cut it completely back this spring and it is a new bush now. Love it, but hope it makes some flowers.
Your Clematis looks like it is trying to grow. I planted 4 last year and 2 are doing really well and 2 are struggling. The garden shop told me that the base likes shade on the top sun. So I think that was the answer to the 2 that did well. They are shaded at the ground more then the others. May be some truth to that advice.
Anyway, your bloom is gorgeous and it may take this year to seat itself and next year really take off.
My mom grew beautiful peonies. They just remind me of a lush full open rose. You sure took some wonderful pics. I love the one with the morning dew. That could be enlarged and framed.

Have a wonderful week my friend.

  19. Connie, what is magnificent is your photos. Wow, I loved each one as your peony opened up. The ones with the dew are so lovely. I am proud of you 'Sweet Pea' Smiling I think you just have to let them bend to the ground. Peonies are so heavy because the blooms are large. They are sensitive to rain storms too. It can beat them to a pulp. If you see a bad storm coming try to protect them with a cover of some kind.

Your clematis is so pretty. I planted one recently just about the size of yours. It has a single purple flower. I hope the little one survives. My guess is it will.

    Happy peonies.
    Hugs, Jeanne

  20. Connie, our climate isn't very good for peonies, but yours if absolutely gorgeous. I love that close up with all the pink you did. That would make a beautiful card front(hint, hint). I don't like taking pictures from someone's blog without asking permission first. I love the clematis and mine are taking over places that I never planted them. Guess the seeds just blew and grew. The hummers love them. My dad succeded in planting some but they dug some up and weed eated the rest to the ground. I managed to dig me one up, but it hasn't bloomed yet. Love and hugs, Pat

  22. Dear Connie, please don't shoot me but you must come by my blog and see the purple clematis. I also posted about the white a few post back. :) xoxo

P.s. I found some old scalloped rusty wire garden edging in my Mom's garage and used that to make wire cages for my peonies.
